Honoring the Legacy of Mark

Mark, simply put, was not just the Race Director of the Essentia Health Fargo Marathon, but its very essence. His warm and genuine nature endeared him to all who had the privilege of meeting him during his races, and his kindness, drive, and passion were evident to everyone he encountered. He poured his heart and soul into the things he loved—his family, friends, and his events.

The Essence of the Race

Mark was a dear friend to so many within the running community and beyond, and we are profoundly aware of the immeasurable impact Mark had as a pillar of the Fargo community. Over the past 19 years, he dedicated himself to transforming the Fargo Marathon into a world-class event that attracted runners from around the globe. His relentless pursuit of excellence and his commitment to providing an unforgettable experience for all participants set the Fargo Marathon apart.

Honoring the Legacy of Mark

We want to assure you that, in his honor, we are steadfast in our commitment to producing the 22nd anniversary of the race and ensuring it is a fitting tribute to the man who touched our hearts in so many ways. Together, we will ensure that the event continues to be a celebration of Fargo, a testament to Mark’s enduring legacy, and an event that would make him proud.

To honor his incredible legacy, the Fargo Marathon team has worked diligently alongside Mark’s family to find the best ways to enshrine his memory in the race he so adored. The Friday Night 5K, which was an event Mark was always enthusiastic about, has been officially renamed the Mark Knutson Friday Night 5K. Along with the race’s name, the 5K swag is planned to be 80’s rock-themed, which was Mark’s favorite.

A portion of the half and full marathon courses has been designated “Mark’s Mile”, where spectators will be directed as runners pass by to the sounds of 80’s rock music and their family and friends cheering them on! Each participant’s bib will also have a tear-off tab that can be used to donate $5 to Shoes for Kids, a charity Mark established aimed at supporting children across the Fargo community.

Continuing the Legacy

We invite you to take part in continuing the legacy of Mark Knutson. Whether you choose to run, spectate, donate, or volunteer, we know that you will find impressions of Mark all throughout Fargo Marathon weekend. Mark’s hardworking, friendly, welcoming, and down-to-earth nature will be carried for years to come in the Fargo Marathon. We look forward to having you here and celebrating his legacy in 2026 and beyond.
